Coorg History, Karnataka

The early history of Coorg is enveloped in darkness. The picturesque land was under the reigns of the Lingayat rulers with capital at Madikeri. In 1785 AD, the powerful ruler of Mysore Tipu Sultan defeated the Kodavas-the people of Coorg. After four years, the hill station got back its independence with the help of the British. It was the generous Raja Veerajendra who initiated reconstruction of the region. With the British taking the reign in their hands in 1834 AD, Chikkaveera Rajendra, the last ruler was impeached and exiled.

Coorg till date carries gracefully the legacy of its colonial masters. The coffee estates and old bunglows are reminiscent of the colonial days.
